Blur and spotlight an area

Blur part of a screen recording or spotlight an area in the web editor, and set when the effect appears in the video.

Use Blur to blur an area of a recorded screen, or Focus to spotlight an area by dimming everything around it. Both need a screen source in the selected scene, and their buttons stay grayed out without one.

Note:

This page is about the web editor. To blur page elements live while recording with the extension, see Blur sensitive information.

  1. Open an editable video and select the scene on the timeline.
  2. In the top bar of the editor, choose Blur or Focus.
  3. The new overlay is selected in the preview. Move and resize it over the area you want to affect.
  4. Adjust Strength and Corners in the overlay's settings. For Blur, Strength is how strongly the area is blurred. For Focus, it is how dark the surrounding screen gets. Use the overlay's timing controls on the timeline to choose when it appears.
  5. Play through the affected section and check the placement and timing, including where the content moves.
Warning:

Blur is a visual effect, not permanent redaction of the source recording. A rendered export includes the blur in the video, but a share page may show a version where the blur is an overlay and the unblurred source can still be accessible. Do not rely on the share page to conceal sensitive information. Blur and Focus only affect the screen, not your camera, and they stay in one place on it. They move with zooms and crops, but they don't follow content that scrolls or moves, so check that the blur covers the intended area for the entire time it appears.

To edit a standalone extension recording here, first download it and upload it to your account. The web app requires an active subscription or trial.
