Use and customize keyboard shortcuts

See the default Screenity keyboard shortcuts for recording and drawing, and learn how to change them on Chrome's extension shortcuts page.

Keyboard shortcuts let you control Screenity without reaching for the mouse.

For a reference covering the web app and extension, see keyboard shortcuts.

How to view your shortcuts in Chrome

You can see and customize all your available shortcuts by pasting chrome://extensions/shortcuts into your address bar and visiting the page.

Default shortcuts

Screenity comes with default shortcuts for the most common recording actions:

ActionWindows / LinuxmacOS
Cancel recording: discard a recording immediately, without a confirmationAlt + Shift + X⌥ ⇧ X
Pause / Resume recordingAlt + Shift + M⌥ ⇧ M
Start recording: start with the last settings you usedAlt + Shift + G⌥ ⇧ G

You can also activate the extension to open the Screenity popup without selecting its icon. Check the shortcuts page for its assigned shortcut. The start shortcut is also shown next to the recording button in the popup.

Additional shortcuts (optional)

These actions have no default key, but you can assign one on the shortcuts page. They are Stop recording, Toggle drawing mode, Toggle blur mode, Toggle hide UI, Toggle cursor options and Toggle microphone. The microphone toggle does nothing while push to talk is on.

Note: If you selected the Camera tab in the popup beforehand, and have no camera available, Screenity won’t be able to start recording automatically. You might also have to select what you want to record in a modal.

How to set or edit your shortcuts in Chrome

To set a shortcut, select the pencil icon and press the keys you want to use.

You can also switch whether a shortcut will work from anywhere, or from Chrome only.

Because these shortcuts are set in your browser, a shortcut can stop working if another extension or Chrome itself uses the same keys. If one doesn't respond, pick a different combination here.

In-page shortcuts

Screenity also has a few shortcuts of its own, which work in specific situations.

  • Push to talk. If activated in the popup, hold Alt + Shift + U on Windows/Linux or ⌥⇧U on Mac to turn the microphone on. The page you're recording needs to be in focus.
  • Zoom to cursor. With Zoom to cursor on, hold Alt + Shift + E on Windows/Linux or ⌥⇧E on Mac to zoom toward the pointer, and release to zoom out.
  • Undo. While in drawing mode, you can press Ctrl + Z on Windows/Linux or ⌘Z on Mac to undo an action.
  • Redo. While in drawing mode, you can press Ctrl + Shift + Z on Windows/Linux or ⌘⇧Z on Mac to redo an action (Control + Y also redoes on Windows/Linux).
  • Drawing tools. In drawing mode, press 1 for select, 2 pen, 3 highlighter, 4 eraser, 5 to open the color picker, 6 text, 7 rectangle, 8 arrow, 9 to add an image, and 0 to clear. With the eraser, ⌫ or Delete removes the selected object. Press Esc to leave drawing or blur mode.

Note: In-page shortcuts may conflict with shortcuts used by websites.
