# Crop and frame your video

> Crop your screen or camera in the web editor to control what shows in a scene, and apply the crop to a layout or scene.

Crop a source to control what appears in a scene, or change the canvas aspect ratio for the finished video.

This page is about the web editor. The standalone extension has its own, simpler **Crop** in its local editor, which crops the whole recording. See [Crop a recording](https://screenity.io/help/editing/crop-a-recording).

_Video: Select Crop beneath the preview, choose the screen, drag the corners of the crop in around part of the picture, then apply the crop to the scene._

1. Select a scene and choose **Crop** beneath the preview.
2. Choose the screen or camera, or a selected image, from the menu. A source the scene doesn't have is grayed out.
3. Adjust the crop in the dialog. See [Adjust the crop](#adjust-the-crop).
4. Choose where the crop applies from the menu beside the apply button, then select the button. Its label names the scope, for example **Apply crop** or **Apply to this scene**.
5. Review the result in the preview.

Nothing changes until you apply. **Cancel**, or `Esc`, closes the dialog and discards your edits. Applying is one step you can undo.

## Adjust the crop

- Drag a corner or edge handle to resize the crop, or drag inside the box to move it. The arrow keys move it one step at a time. Hold `Shift` for larger steps.
- Hold `Shift` while resizing to keep the current ratio, or `Alt` (Windows/Linux) or `Option` (Mac) to scale from the center.
- Select the size shown at the top of the dialog to choose a ratio (**Free**, **Original**, **1:1**, **16:9**, **9:16**, **4:3** or **4:5**) or to enter exact position and size values.
- The ratio is fixed when the scene uses a device or browser frame, or a circle camera. The dialog says which one sets it.

## Choose where the crop applies

- **This layout** applies the crop only to the layout showing at the playhead.
- **This scene** applies it to every layout in the scene. This is the default.
- **All scenes** appears when other scenes have a matching source, and applies the crop to each of them.

To go back to the default crop, open **Crop** again, select **Reset crop** at the top of the dialog, and apply.

## Crop and canvas

Cropping changes the visible area of a source. It does not cut time from the video. To change the shape of the whole video, use the aspect-ratio control below the preview.

To place a screen recording inside a phone, laptop or browser mockup, see [Add a device or browser frame](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/add-device-and-browser-frames).
