# Glossary

| <span id="scene"><strong>Scene</strong></span> | A segment of a video in the editor. A scene can contain a recording or other media, or be built with elements such as text and shapes. | <span id="timeline-and-playhead"><strong>Timeline and playhead</strong></span> | The timeline shows the order and duration of scenes. The playhead marks the point you're previewing or editing. [Work with scenes and the timeline](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/work-with-scenes). |
| <span id="layout"><strong>Layout</strong></span> | The arrangement of the screen and camera in a scene. Available layouts depend on the sources in that scene. [Change layouts](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/change-layouts). |
| <span id="overlay"><strong>Overlay</strong></span> | An element, such as text, a shape or an image, placed on top of a scene. [Add text and overlays](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/add-text-and-overlays). |
| <span id="instant-recording"><strong>Instant recording</strong></span> | A mode for quickly sharing a recording made with the extension while signed in with a subscription. Instant videos open in the viewer rather than the full editor. | <span id="transcript-and-captions"><strong>Transcript and captions</strong></span> | A transcript is text of the speech in a video's audio. Captions display that text during playback. You can correct transcript wording and use it to edit speech. Caption appearance is controlled separately.
