> Trim a recording, remove a section, or mute part of its audio in the Screenity extension's local editor before you download it.

After a standalone recording, use the extension's local editor to trim, cut or mute it.

This page is about the extension's local editor. If your video is in the Screenity web app, its editor works differently. See [Trim, split and rearrange scenes](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/trim-split-and-rearrange-scenes) or [Cut a section from a scene](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/cut-a-section-from-a-scene).

To crop the picture instead, see [Crop a recording](https://screenity.io/help/editing/crop-a-recording).

## How to use the editor

1. In the recording player, select **Edit video**.
2. Drag the selection handles to choose a part of the video. The start and end times of your selection show next to the buttons.
3. Select **Trim video** to keep the selection, **Cut section** to remove it, or **Mute audio** to silence the audio in it. **Trim video** and **Cut section** stay grayed out until you move a handle. If you don't move the handles, **Mute audio** silences the whole recording.
4. Review your changes. Use **Undo** or **Redo** to adjust them.
5. Select **Save changes** to return to the player, then [download your recording](https://screenity.io/help/editing/how-to-download-your-videos). **Save changes** stays disabled while a selection is waiting to be applied, and until you have made at least one edit.

**Cancel** leaves the editor and drops your changes. **Revert to original** restores the original recording in the editor.

The **Edit video** row reads **Preparing...** while the player gets your recording ready. It reads **Not available** or **Unavailable for long recordings** when the recording is too long to edit. See [editing long recordings](https://screenity.io/help/editing/why-is-editing-disabled-on-long-videos-by-default).

For scene-based editing or [editing with a transcript](https://screenity.io/help/web-editor/edit-video-with-transcript), you can [upload a downloaded video](https://screenity.io/help/web-library/import-videos) to the web app. This requires an account and active subscription or trial. The uploaded file is a separate project, so later edits do not sync between the two editors.
